It's a real treasure trove, very exciting to brainstorm ways to make use of my materials.

Among my sub-stashes is an incredible collection of felt. I have inexpensive big-box craft-store felt (which, honestly, I don't like), as well as the wonderful saturated colors of real wool felt from the Purl Soho sewing store. I don't know how to use a sewing machine, but I do enjoy sewing by hand, and I'm completely self-taught and therefore not a pro by any means. But it's fun anyway.

So my latest de-stash felt project is this dolly, made for my daughter from a remarkably simple and clever pattern found on the Purl Bee website:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 365px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pq0NGA3GnPg/TcasGboRr9I/AAAAAAAADIk/pMBB2uLSeHM/s400/dolly2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604356012805042130" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-loA9YZbyU78/Tcar7NAMlJI/AAAAAAAADIc/9Yk7hfR9wY0/s400/dolly1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604355819900277906" />

These were fun to make, and lovely to look at: the legs are even jointed with buttons at the hips so that she can sit!

Next up in my de-stash is the world's easiest blanket. Somehow I have managed to collect skeins of Vanna's Choice yarn in nearly every color! I had easily enough for two generous afghans, and have finished one already for my husband:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 394px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5JG1cK4IgGw/TcaryNttorI/AAAAAAAADIU/rPqXQuliFA8/s400/blanket1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604355665472365234" />

The pattern is absolute beginner crochet: chain as many stitches as you like, with even tension (not too tight, not too loose)--I did around 100 maybe--then two rows of each color in half double crochet, switch colors, another two rows of the next color in half-double-crochet...etc etc till you have the length you like! I did two rows of half-double-crochet edging all around the blanket, and it was done in a week.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-F5uHEmgjHfE/TcarnWKalaI/AAAAAAAADIM/mRPazgDRSmI/s400/blanket2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604355478761674146" />

It's warm, machine washable, colorful, and everyone likes to snuggle with it on the couch. I've already started a second, which will finish up my stash! Go Vanna!

Scrap Projects

This winter my favorite project has been fingerless gloves and mitts. I've made so many pairs! It's a perfect way to use up half-skeins, and you can make them as long or as short as you like. This pair was from leftover Lion Brand Amazing, and a simple pretty crochet pattern, "Fingerless Glovettes" by Sandi Wiseheart:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_v4g8kxZoIcs/TUl1OQbiP_I/AAAAAAAADCs/sLLq4wxlea4/s400/fingerless%2Bmitts.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569111302009405426" />

Also on the needles was a chevron scarf (pattern from Interweave Press' "Scarf Style"), using some lovely sock yarn from Blue Moon Fiber Arts:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_v4g8kxZoIcs/TUl1ibZAb_I/AAAAAAAADC0/2JKxTW87jF8/s400/chevron%2Bscarf.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569111648548974578" />

As the proud owner of a massive stash of appealing single skeins, many of these sock yarns, I must recommend the wonderfully creative variety of projects found in "Sock Yarn One Skein Wonders".

A Mouse Tale

I'm not much of a sewer, but I do like to make little bits of things when the mood strikes. My mother got a sudden hankering for a little felt mouse and so I obliged. I found a good pattern HERE, though I had too much trouble turning the tiny arms inside out, so I decided flat felt arms were good enough for her.

I raided my not insignificant scrap stash for her skirt, and quilt and pillow pieces (still in the process of making her bedding). I'd wanted to make one as interesting and fabulous as my Rowan Ripple, but couldn't find just the right yarn. Along came Knitpicks Palette, originally purchased for a finicky colorwork purse. At around 2 dollars a substantial skein, this fingering weight yarn comes in an insane range of saturated colors and is a fabulous bargain. I'm using a size E Clover crochet hook with ergonomic handle, and the whole experience is delightful--the yarn isn't splitty, but moves along the hook with speed and ease and shows the swoops and peaks of the ripple pattern very nicely. I'm in deep like with Palette, I can tell you. And I'm really happy with the crazy color combo of this blanket. All in all, a satisfying project.

Heart Dishcloth

I really enjoy the clever simplicity of the knit-purl pattern dish cloth. So easy to do, if you just keep track of rows--easy stitching, alternating knit and purl, and a picture emerges! I did this dish cloth in plain old Peaches & Creme--followed this pattern for a knit-and-purl heart, omitting the garter stitch border. This type of border is always used to prevent a piece from curling, but I already knew I wanted to add my own crochet border when I was done, so I suffered the curling (and curl it did!). I picked up stitches with my crochet hook and pink cotton, and did two rounds of half double crochet. I then added the scalloped edging for an extra fancy embellishment.

The last step was to embroider backstitch in pink over the outline of the purl heart, just to get it to stand out as much as I wanted. I was oddly pleased with the girly-frilly-silly effect of this. I love saturated colors, but, honestly, I don't mind pastels either, in moderation.

This one is going out tomorrow in a dishcloth swap.

It's the Little Things

Sometimes you want instant gratification. That's when dish cloths come into play (don't they always?). And sometimes, you want a project that's not really even a project at all and that doesn't require a pattern or more commitment than part of an hour...

Here you have the simplest dish cloth in the world. Cast 23 stitches of cotton onto size 6 needles. Seed stitch until square. Border with half double crochet. Beyond easy. Useful. Lovely. About 75 cents a piece.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_v4g8kxZoIcs/StXlTJGgMYI/AAAAAAAACeM/DOvZf7tMUBU/s400/100_0077.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392468245869506946" />

Potholder/Dishrag Set

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_v4g8kxZoIcs/So8M5iU16JI/AAAAAAAACWU/CR-rzmUmNGA/s400/100_0100.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372527063082592402" />

I made this set for a swap, and was a bit sad to see it go. in the Catherine the Great and the Rachel Carson colorways. It took me two evenings to finish, and I was able to memorize the pattern after only a few repeats. This yarn has gorgeous drape, although I might have liked it to be a bit longer. Oh, well. I think it is essential to make this scarf with a drapey yarn, or it wouldn't have the same appeal--and the Schaefer has a very nice sheen to it, so it has both drape and a nice depth of texture. I would definitely make this again in the same yarn, or another similar pima cotton.

Another baby has recently come into our circle, so the other Schaefer skein is now earmarked for a receiving blanket.

Flannels

I love that Britishism for a face cloth; I wonder if they still use the word, or is it just something from books...

My mother needed three special little gifts to give, and hoped I could oblige within two days (short notice!). If you like shawls, and you'd like to make one from a single color, there's a whole lot of inspiration at Garn Studios lovely site with dozens of shawl patterns.

However if, like me, you're struggling to find things to do with odd bits and pieces of stash, you must try this fun project I discovered over at Yarnloopie: The Sunday Morning Shawl. Her shawls are stunning, very inspiring for a color-obsessive like me. I gathered up my sock yarn scraps and got to work, and continued until I had run out of the color scheme I'd decided upon. It took a few days, but the beauty of it is that, because it's simple garter stitch with occasional symmetrical increases, you need not watch your stitches carefully, and so can do it while watching a movie. I knit my way through "Night at the Museum II," "Robin Hood," "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," "We're No Angels," and "The Sea Hawk." Brilliant!

I did a couple of rounds of half-double-crocheted edging with some extra sock yarn remnant in a solid, contrasting color, which I thought tidied it up a bit.

Here's my first finished Sunday Shawl:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_v4g8kxZoIcs/SiRWAWAQyTI/AAAAAAAACKo/wjj4ap3xvn4/s400/Sunday+Afternoon+Shawl+Close-up.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342489621874919730" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_v4g8kxZoIcs/SiRVvXOyVjI/AAAAAAAACKg/KvVM9KF2zd0/s400/Sunday+Afternoon+Shawl+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342489330146498098" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_v4g8kxZoIcs/SiRVjAIogTI/AAAAAAAACKY/DZSMcnKmjtU/s400/Sunday+Afternoon+Shawl+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342489117788242226" />

And here's my next one, still in its formative stage. These balls of muted but lovely Koigu Premium Merino were originally purchased two years ago with the intention of making them into a "Charlotte's Web" shawl. I gave it the old college try, not once but twice, and found the lace pattern incredibly finicky and tedious, especially with all the color switching. But why not the simple Sunday Shawl! What a revelation, and so reassuring to know that they will go to good use!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_v4g8kxZoIcs/SiRWRYxq_yI/AAAAAAAACKw/oYqkLs411l0/s400/Koigu+balls.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342489914676805410" />

You can find the pattern free on Ravelry.com. If you're making one for a child, you won't need more than a skein or two, DK weight. If you have scrap yarn, DK weight, or half-finished skeins, this would be lovely in stripes. I made a basic bucket hat to fit, then added a row of scallops around the brim.

I crocheted a simple applique flower in the contrasting color, and stitched each petal flush to the hat.

I love how it makes my little girl look like she should be in the audience of the Monterey Pop festival, 1967. This is the simplest thing in the world to crochet, but extremely time-consuming. I've made a whole bunch of these now, and I've found that the more colors you use, the more fun the project is. My favorite Ripple afghan is still the first one I made, of every color of Rowan Cotton Glace. This was one expensive mother of a blanket. It's got gorgeous, heavy drape, and it is Sarge's fave:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_v4g8kxZoIcs/Sg2IipfCi2I/AAAAAAAACHM/sW9z5uYhRoI/s400/rowan+ripple.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336071262336879458" />

Here's the Ripple I made for a friend's baby, out of Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, all leftover balls from various projects, including an Elizabeth Zimmerman Baby Surprise Jacket:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_v4g8kxZoIcs/Sg2IVmDeczI/AAAAAAAACHE/quJ33xF1kNs/s400/baby+ripple.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336071038077662002" />

Baby Ripples are satisfying because of their size: they just don't take all that long. Especially a newborn "receiving" blanket. I also recently made my little girl a Little-Girl-Sized Ripple (also quick to make) out of Lion Brand Wool Ease in a rainbow, with a red border. The colors weren't as saturated as I would have liked, a little subdued, but perhaps that added an elegance to an inelegant color concept (the rainbow...)...or so I like to think:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_v4g8kxZoIcs/SjU1ixEbxoI/AAAAAAAACNM/rnVEejZXAWM/s400/rainbow+ripple_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347239003976091266" />

Currently I'm working on a new Ripple, of Rowan Cashsoft DK--it's fantastically luxe, and I got it in a nice variety of soft pastels. It feels wonderful to the hand:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_v4g8kxZoIcs/Sg2IHxxErqI/AAAAAAAACG8/5xUIP3drcHI/s400/cashmere+ripple.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336070800703532706" />

PATTERNS:

For me, the classic Ripple pattern is "Soft Waves" by Jan Eaton in the book "200 Ripple Stitch Patterns." There is another pattern, with an inspirational photo, in the book "Vintage Crochet". Or, if you don't want to purchase these, Lion Brand has a perfectly serviceable set of ripple patterns here.

LINKS:

Be sure to visit the No End in Sight Ripple-Along for more inspiration!
